  2.  Registration is close to capacity for the NJRW full day masterclass with Damon Suede on Saturday, April 14th.  If you'd like to attend this event, don't wait to register! Seating is limited!

NJRW is proud to present a full day masterclass with Damon Suede on Saturday, April 14th. Register now! Seating is limited!

Based on techniques presented in his new book on characterization and story planning, Damon Suede presents a full-day masterclass on bringing stories to life and life to stories.

This full-day workshop includes two masterclass sessions designed to help you tackle the issues and challenges specific to your creative process.

    MOVING CHARACTERS: action figures – 9am – 12pm

Bestsellers start with fascinating people. Boost your writing process and anchor your career at any stage with a new characterization method that jumpstarts drafting, crafting, revision, and pitching. In this deep-dive morning session, we’ll take your fictional folks to the next level with a simple, powerful technique that will strengthen your people, your plots, your hooks, and your voice whether you’re a plotter or pantser, a beginner or an expert. Go beyond looks, persona, and boilerplate traits so you can bust your ruts and build the perfect cast to dazzle your readers.

    CASTING CALL: starring roles – 1:30pm – 4:30pm

For the afternoon, we’ll get personal and practical. Expanding on the techniques presented earlier, this session gets down to the nitty gritty of crafting your own fascinating cast without unnecessary trivia, digression, or theory. Spotlight your primary characters with a supporting lineup that amps the stakes and emotion in every scene. Bring a project that’s in process or start one from scratch in the room, and we’ll zero in on the best possible dramatis personae so your story can write itself.

In addition, each attendee will receive a print copy of Verbalize, a new writer guide which lays out fresh, practical solutions which will expand on the day’s material. Most writing manuals skirt craft questions with gimmicks and quick fixes rather than plugging directly into your story’s power source. Energize your fiction and boost your career with

    ·       a new characterization method that jumpstarts drafting, crafting, revision, and pitching.

    ·       skill-builders to intensify language, stakes, and emotion for your readers.

    ·       battle-tested solutions for common traps, crutches, and habits.

    ·       a dynamic story-planning strategy effective for plotters and pantsers.

    ·       ample examples and exercises to help you upgrade fiction in any genre.

Blast past overused tics and types with storycraft that busts your ruts and awes your audience with a fresh set of user-friendly, language-based tools to populate your pages and lay the foundations of unforgettable genre fiction.

    About the Presenter

Damon Suede grew up out-n-proud deep in the anus of right-wing America, and escaped as soon as it was legal. He has lived all over and along the way, he’s earned his crust as a model, a messenger, a promoter, a programmer, a sculptor, a singer, a stripper, a bookkeeper, a bartender, a techie, a teacher, a director... but writing has ever been his bread and butter. He has been happily partnered for over a decade with the most loving, handsome, shrewd, hilarious, noble man to walk this planet.

Damon is a proud member of the Romance Writers of America and the Rainbow Romance Writers. Though new to romance fiction, Damon has been writing for print, stage, and screen for two decades, which is both more and less glamorous than you might imagine. He's won some awards, but counts his blessings more often: his amazing friends, his demented family, his beautiful husband, his loyal fans, and his silly, stern, seductive Muse who keeps whispering in his ear, year after year. Damon would love to hear from you.... Get in touch with him at DamonSuede.com.

  14. PERMISSION TO FORWARD!

With all the excitement on changes in the ether, we wanted to make sure you knew about an update on registration for New Jersey Romance Writer's Put Your Heart in a Book Conference. It's been extended!

So if you thought you'd missed out, you haven't! For this great regional conference, scheduled to take place five weeks from now, October 22-23 at the Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel just 25 minutes south of Newark Airport., there's still time to sign up at www.njromancewriters.org.

We've told you some of the reasons why. Here's some more. As of last count we have 14 editors taking appointments...and 14 agents doing likewise, including the latest, Emily Sylvan Kim of the Prospect Agency. And you did hear that Leah Hultenschmidt of Sourcebooks will be joining us, didn't you? Here's an FYI: this is Leah's first conference taking appointments since she moved to Sourcebooks.

What does this mean for you? Unlike National, when you might have had a chance to make one pitch (if you got your name in early enough) at NJRW's Conference, you have an opportunity to make your pitch to more than one professional.

Not only do we have a full complement of editors and agents, but the speakers are top drawer. The list is headed by Sharon Sala, Robyn Carr, Leanne Banks, and special presenter, Bob Mayer.

Plus there's a veritable cross-section of the best writers in romance. Past and current RITA winners, countless of those who have been nominated., writers who are great teachers like Julianne MacLean and Madeline Hunter, humorists like Heidi Betts and MaryJanice Davidson, multi-published Harlequin authors like Rochelle Alers and Tori Carrington, YA specialists like Keri Mikulski and Cyn Balog. And there's many more! (Come back next week... we'll treat you to the more of the list...or you can go to www.njromancewriters.org and check it out yourself.)

Have you registered? If you haven't, you have until October 4. But don't wait until the last moment because remember, you want to get one...or more...of those coveted editor or agent appointments! Go to www.njromancewriters.org and click on theconference registration tab. Got questions? Feel free to ask either one of us:

  16. ok I promised you more reasons WHY you should attend NJRW's conference. So here is another ;)

Yes, we know the headliners are great: Sharon Sala, Robyn Carr, Leanne Banks,

and, giving a special pre-conference workshop, Bob Mayer.

Set for Friday and Saturday, October 22-23 at the Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel

in Iselin, the conference promises to be fantastic. Not only is there a great

lineup of speakers giving dozens of fabulous workshops, but there are plenty or

editors and agents to whom you can pitch your work.

On the theme that we started earlier, here's REASON TWO for why you should

    register for the PYHIAB Conference.

    Editors and agents.

    Many of them.

Editors from Avalon, Avon, Grand Central, Harlequin, Kensington, and NAL.

Agents from PMA, John Hawkins, the Maria Carvainis Agency, Dystel & Goderich, 3 Seas

Literary and FinePrint to name just a few.

Will you get an appointment? Do you want one? You might even get two!

You'll find the place to sign up on the website: www.njromancewriters.org.

    PERMISSION TO FORWARD

We continue the series we started where we give you reasons why

you should register for our New Jersey Romance Writers' Put Your Heart in a Book

Conference, October 22-23 at the Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel just 25 minutes

south of Newark Liberty International Airport.

We totally know our headliners are great and you're going to love hearing them:

Sharon Sala, Robyn Carr, Leanne Banks. Giving a special pre-conference workshop,

Bob Mayer. These four are the first reason why you should make the NJRW

    Conference a must-attend.

But now comes REASON THREE for why you should attend the NJRW Conference: we're

lucky enough to have four authors, who also happen to be 2010 RITA finalists,

giving workshops! We're talking about Jessica Andersen in the Contemporary

Series Romance: Suspense/Adventure category, for "Mountain Investigation;" Cyn

Balog, in the Young Adult Romance category, for "Fairy Tale;" Molly O'Keefe in

the Romance Novella category, "The Christmas Eve Promise;" and Sherry Thomas in

the Historical Romance category, for "Not Quite a Husband." We are very excited

to have Jessica, Cyn, Molly, and Sherry giving workshops and know their sessions

    will be amazingly well attended.

If you've signed up for the conference already, we look forward to seeing you.

But if you haven't, don't miss a chance to hear these wonderful speakers at the

NJRW Conference. Please go to www.njromancewriters.org to the Conference tab. To

register, click on the second from the top link.

    PERMISSION TO FORWARD

There's been a little gap between these postings. We're blaming the summer heat. In spite of the 90 degree days, nothing will stop us for long in our quest to make sure you have as many reasons as you need as to why you should register for our New Jersey Romance Writers' Put Your Heart in a Book Conference, October 22-23 at the Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel just 25 minutes south of Newark Liberty International Airport.

We love our headliners. Sharon Sala, Robyn Carr, Leanne Banks? You're going to love them! Plus what could be better than attending a special pre-conference workshop, given by Bob Mayer? All by themselves, these four are the first reason why you should make the NJRW Conference a must-attend.

But here we go with REASON FOUR for why you should attend the NJRW Conference: the executive and senior editors from Romantic Times, Faygie Levy and Elissa Petruzzi giving a workshop on how you, as a published author, an almost pubbed author, or even a sometime in the future pubbed author should approach media outlets. Who would know better than these two top-notch professionals?

Faygie has been at Romantic Times sine 2005. She has helped reshape the magazine's content and focus to be more inclusive of all genres of fiction. Before coming to RT, Faygie was a working journalist herself, mostly in the Philly area, where she won numerous awards for her work.

Elissa has been with RT since 2006. She, too, has a background in journalism. She has written for In Touch Weekly, the Baltimore Sun, and USA WEEKEND.

These two great editors, who by the way love to talk with authors and get sneak peeks at books before they're released, are just the people you want to hear from as you contemplate that essential piece of promoting your writing career: earned media.

If you've signed up for the conference already, we look forward to seeing you.

But if you haven't, don't miss a chance to hear Faygie Levy and Elissa Petruzzi from Romantic Times at the NJRW Conference. Please go to www.njromancewriters.org to the Conference tab. To register, click on the second from the top link.

  19. PERMISSION TO FORWARD.....

    Hi there,

Registration for New Jersey Romance Writer's Put Your Heart in a Book (PYHIAB)

Conference is in full swing. Set for Friday and Saturday, October 22-23 at the

Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel in Iselin, the conference promises to be a

knock-out. Not only is there a great lineup of speakers giving dozens of

fabulous workshops, but almost two dozen editors and agents are already

scheduled to take appointments, with more on the way.

If you've signed up, great! We'll be thrilled to see you in October. But if you

haven't yet, there are many reasons why you should. Like hearing our Big Three,

Sharon Sala, Robyn Carr, and Leanne Banks speak. Plus…the opportunity to attend

a special pre-conference workshop given by Bob Mayer.

Every week – maybe even twice a week over the summer – we'll be giving you more

great reasons why you absolutely cannot afford to miss the NJRW Put Your Heart

    in a Book Conference.

Here's REASON ONE: Peter Miller, literary agent extraordinaire, will be giving a

workshop at the Conference. Miller, known as the literary lion, has been an

active literary and film manager for more than thirty years. He is President of

PMA Literary and Film Management, Inc. and Millennium Lion, Inc; he and his

company have successfully managed more than 1,000 books worldwide, as well as

dozens of motion picture and television properties.

These works include eleven New York Times Bestsellers, and fourteen produced

films that Miller has managed or executive produced. Miller has a number of film

and television projects currently in active development, with some nearing

production, in association with Warner Bros. Features, Warner Bros. Television,

Paramount/DreamWorks, HBO, and many other producers and production companies.

What does this mean to you? If you've entertained thoughts of not only writing

that blockbuster novel of the year, but then seeing it get made into a movie,

you absolutely, positively must hear Peter Miller speak. The title of his

workshop is "Metamorphosis: Best Selling Novel to Hollywood."

If you've got questions, please go to our website, www.njromancewriters.org or

email me off loop and I will be happy to answer any and all.

    Look for REASON TWO soon!

    * * * * **********************

Registration for New Jersey Romance Writers' 2009 Put Your Heart in a Book Conference is well under way!

We have some great things planned for our 25th anniversary conference, Oct. 23-24, 2009, at the Renaissance Woodbridge Hotel (formerly the Woodbridge Hotel & Conference Center), Iselin, NJ.

It all starts with a stellar slate of speakers, led by featured guests Karen Rose, keynote; Allison Brennan, luncheon speaker; and Angela Knight, our Special Presentation Speaker for the first 100 conference registrants.

    NEW THIS YEAR:

    * Half-day Pre-conference Workshop, "The Novel: Idea to Completed

Manuscript," with Bob Mayer. This special four-hour event will cover the following topics:

    * The Original Idea: The Heart of Your Story and Key to Selling Your

Book - Say what your book is about in 25 words or less.

    * Conflict: The Fuel of Your Story - The Conflict Box focuses on

protagonist, antagonist, goals and the conflict lock.

    * Outlining and Plot: The Events of Your Story - The entire structure

of the novel will be covered, from hook to resolution.

    * Characters: The People of Your Story - The most critical component

of a novel is character. How do you go from flat, two-dimensional characters to vibrant, three-dimensional ones?

    * Point of View: The Voice of Your Story - Use the concept of the

"camera" and being the book's "director" to master point of view.

    * Expanded PAN Retreat - Published authors will get a special treat

this year, as our PAN Retreat is kicked off in a big way with special guest Beth de Guzman, VP and Editor-in-Chief of Paperbacks of Grand Central Publishing. Beth is known for her candid discussions about the romance publishing industry and she'll be sharing her knowledge of the business with published authors in attendance. During both an informal discussion format and a Q&A period, published romance authors will hear about the state of publishing and be able to

ask their questions of this experienced, influential publishing professional. In addition to the Retreat keynote speaker, NJRW PAN is planning several roundtable discussion groups about different facets and issues in the industry and topics of interest to published romance authors.

Plus, the conference will feature editor/agent appointments, the Golden Leaf & Put Your Heart in a Book Awards Ceremony, Literacy Book Fair and Author Signing, and more. You won't want to miss out!
