Cost: $15.00 Registration information: http://www.rwaonlinechapter.org/campus.htm About the workshop: Secondary Characters: The Good, the Bad and the Quirky covers the types of secondary characters that appear in books and the many roles these characters play in supporting and enhancing your plot or main character development. We will discuss was to make unique (not trite!) secondary characters that add depth to your story without taking over the book. Also covered is how to handle those secondary characters that do try to steal scenes…and how to set up secondary characters for books of their own. Course Outline: I. The functions or roles your secondary characters can play: Mentor Informant Confidante/Sidekick Comic Relief Foil (Symbolic Mirror to Compare/Contrast with the protagonist) Competitor Catalyst for action/decision Obstacle to achieving a goal Red-herring in a mystery/suspense Expendable victim Dependent/ protégé II. What to do when a secondary character takes over the book About the presenter: Award winning author Beth Cornelison received her bachelor's degree in Public Relations from the University of Georgia. After working in public relations for about a year, she moved with her husband to Louisiana, where she decided to pursue her love of writing fiction. Since that time, she has won numerous honors for her work including a final in the 2010 Rita contest sponsored by the Romance Writers of America. She made her first sale to Silhouette Intimate Moments in June 2004 and has gone on to sell many more books to Harlequin/Silhouette. She has also published with Five Star Expressions, Samhain Publishing, and Sourcebooks. Beth has presented workshops across the country to numerous chapter meetings, conferences, online classes and book clubs.
